Artist Statement
I come from a long line of artists and my most essential influence was
my mother Mary. She was a true outsider artist making delightful and whimsical
art out of found bits and pieces. I watched her combine wood, color &
metal and use tools I now use every day. I had no idea I was learning
the thrilling creative process at the time. My journeys to Guatemala,
Asia, the Caribbean and Hawaii have been most influential in my love for
color and pattern. I am drawn to naive art or outsider art creating art
because of need and not commercial reasons. I am drawn to the intensity
and raw energy of Haitian art- full of emotion & religious symbolism.
I received a BS in psychology and I bring that interest to my work. I
am fascinated in what draws people into art instinctively with shapes,
colors, and symbols. I can value all styles of art however I know what
specifically moves me and I don’t pretend my work is for everyone.
I love color and creating art out of unusual materials & hope that
my art makes people feel good. I have an abundance of energy & creating
art is critical to my existence. I feel this is a gift and it is my honor
to share it.
